The Influence of Tik-Tok

Written by Ava Nikac

Everyone knows about Tik-Tok. Even if you don’t have it downloaded, you hear about it everyday. It has such a significant influence on all different industries, specifically the fashion and beauty industries. Even if the videos are making fun of a certain style or product, it brings awareness to it and shows more people about it. Many people look to the app to find new and safer makeup and skincare products or to browse whatever’s in style that season. People look to influencers on Tik-Tok who had their claim to fame through cute outfits and product reviews.

An example of a way that Tik-Tok influenced the fashion industry is bringing back yoga pants. Now called, “flare leggings”, they were heavily popular in the 2010s but then quickly faded. Recently, though, they made their way back into everyone’s lives. One girl made a video with a picture of Emma Chamberlain green screened in the background wearing these pants. The comments flooded with compliments and people saying they needed those pants in their wardrobe. Now, brands like Aerie, Lululemon, Brandy Melville, and Athleta are selling out of them everywhere. I even bought myself a pair! I used to have them when I was a little kid, and now I’m reliving that- not to mention they’re super comfortable.

Another example of a way that Tik-Tok influenced the fashion industry is by bringing back the look of corset belts on top of other layers. I’ve seen them worn on top of flowy dresses to accentuate the waist and even on top of shirts with the same purpose. It actually even inspired me to incorporate that into my designs for our school fashion show. I’ll layer it on top of a cami tank and pair it with flowy pants. This design is also one of my favorites because of the layering and the corset belt addition. It adds dimensions to the outfit that I believe complete my collection. I’ve seen so many people wearing it this way, and more stores have began to sell just the corset belt without the cups. It’s one of my top favorite trends to ever come out of Tik-Tok.

One last example is about how Tik-Tok influenced the beauty industry. Something I can think of is how people test different makeup products or brands and explain how they perform. My personal favorite is @mikaylanogueira, who would spend her own money buying an entire line of products, high end or drugstore, and try them all out. She gives in depth explanations about the product but is never negative. She lets you know if she honestly doesn’t like it, but also tells you it may be better for a different skin tone or type. Eventually, her account grew to such a large following that she now gets sent those lines and gets paid to try them out for her followers.

All in all, Tik-Tok has one of the heaviest influences on the fashion and beauty industries and people rely on it for others opinions. If you don’t have it downloaded, you probably should. It’ll help you get ahead on all the trends and tell you what products aren’t worth the money. I promise that although it’ll help you save a pretty penny, it may also make you spend a pretty penny as well!
