The origin of corsets dates all the way back to 16th century in the western world. They were typically worn by both women and men. They were a close-fitting sleeveless bodice worn under garments. The figure would have a small waist measurement and the chest would be exaggerated. Worn by upper and middle-class women, the prices of the corsets varied. In the 19th century, the health aspect of corsets was warned by doctors. Health professionals said that it was to blame for respiratory issues and diseases, deformity to the ribs, and damage to internal organs as well as led to birth defects and miscarriages. Over time with the the corsets were designed to be more flexible, and the introduction of elastic in clothing was to thank. When the undergarment turned to be obsolete for the times, the damage was already done.

The viewing of women in corsets was for the fantasy and image, setting a standard for beauty. Women turned to plastic surgery, diets, and exercise to get the waist size that they feel they needed. We still see corsets today, and recently in 2021 it came back into fashion trends because of the show Bridgerton. Luxury brands started to showcase them in extravagant dresses.

Now the corset is a vision of aesthetic and is even used in Halloween costumes. Even though the way they are used is different today, the objective is the same; to get a smaller waist and accentuate your body.
